Francis Weal's early work included shop interiors in Oxford Street, residential work in the smartest London addresses, offices and warehousing in Finsbury and housing in Beckenham, Kent. His town planning diploma thesis, published in The Architects Journal, pioneered the idea of restricting car access in areas of scenic interest and the use of park-and-ride schemes.
His expertise in special needs housing resulted in the practice being invited to write a book on housing the elderly. He incorporates these skills into private house commissions and extensions to create ‘homes for life’-now linking with sustainability issues.
He has been an active member of the RIBA, past chairman of the RIBA Southern Region Planning Advisory Group and past chairman of the Central Hampshire Branch of the RIBA.
Partner - Welwyn Office
Francesca Weal trained at Cambridge. She joined the practice in 1982 having worked for Levitt Bernstein Associates, DLG Architects and Trehearne Norman, gaining knowledge of the refurbishment of older housing stock and working on large commercial mixed-use projects in London.
She has an abiding interest in older forms of construction and a specialised knowledge of listed buildings. Our projects combine cutting-edge design with the intelligent use, where appropriate, of traditional building materials in innovative ways.
She is a past chairman of the Hertfordshire Association of Architects and sits on the Hertfordshire Architects Advisory Panel, which advises local authorities on design issues. She is also a member of the Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust and the Pyramus & Thisbe Club - the original association of party wall surveyors.
