Our initial Feasibility Study unlocked Heritage Lottery Development Funding for the Development stage to planning and listed building consent. The scheme expands this Grade 2 listed Museum – relocating the Learning Space (which was inconveniently open to the exhibition space) into the Knot Garden on the site of the old WC block.
The Learning Space is set behind a new ‘garden wall’ of soft red bricks in lime mortar – with puddingstone rustications around the glazed doors. The long length of wall allows room for more exhibits and interpretation boards to be mounted.
17C decorative timber pilasters integrated into glazed partitions open up the stair. Views open up the previously-hidden Knot Garden to the interior. A lift is sited in a gable roof extension.
This Stage D scheme was successful in attracting a near £1M of Heritage Lottery Funding for the subsequent build. Each significant stage of the project was separately tendered.
