Sustainable House in St Albans Conservation Area
Client: Private Client | St Albans
A new ‘lifetime’ house with flexible living accommodation. It is designed to have low energy and environmental impact. The use of Hemcrete and breatheable materials in the timber frame together with deep roof overhangs on the south elevation moderates the comfort in extreme temperatures.
It is in the St Albans Conservation area so planning was a tricky issue. It replaced a smaller chalet bungalow and was designed to fit politely into the street scene.
It won the 2017 St Albans Civic Society Award and the 2017 Hertfordshire Association of Architects’ Sustainability Award.
